Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy

An extension of the art of osteopathic manipulation, craniosacral therapy’s goal is to restore the normal, healthy structure and movement of the body. Practitioners recognize that the bones of the head are individual, meeting at the sutures, allowing for subtle motion which is central to the healthy function of the whole body. The entire craniosacral area moves as one, including the bones, nerves, fluids, and connective tissues of the head and spinal area, down to the sacrum. Gentle hands on treatment in this area can have far reaching effects in the entire body.

    How Does Craniosacral Therapy work?

Craniosacral Therapy focuses on creating a safe space for the patient, and using a very gentle touch. The Technician pays deep attention to the fluctuations of the cerebrospinal fluid within the craniosacral system, as they touch various points on the patient’s body, primarily the head and the sacral area (base of the spine).

The fluctuation of the cerebrospinal fluid creates tidal flows within the system. As the Technician feels these internal tides, the patient’s body begins to access its own inner resources, perhaps a little like finding keys to previously locked doors. The Technician’s hands and awareness give the body a sense of guidance and support that allows dysfunctional patterns to be released.

Craniosacral therapists learn to listen deeply to the system, tapping into its inherent intelligence, focusing on remembering its original blueprint of health. The Technician encourages the patient’s system to access its own resources, offering new choices and possibilities for the system at every level.

The cerebrospinal fluid — as it bathes and protects the brain and spinal cord — carries that innate intelligence and potency, allowing it to becomes mixed with other bodily fluids via the dural membranes.

How Can Craniosacral Therapy Help Me?

The therapy may surprise you with benefits you hadn’t known were possible. This could include resolution of symptoms you had no idea were related to the cranial system, or to each other. You may feel lighter, with a sense of more spaciousness within yourself. You may notice more ease in movement, relationships, or ability to focus. You may stand straighter or breathe more easily and deeply. Pain may decrease, and emotional boundaries may be easier to maintain. It is likely that you will feel deeply relaxed and centered. Each person is unique.

What Conditions Can Craniosacral Therapy Help?

Craniosacral Therapy may be helpful in addressing such situations as:

    • Pain
    • Impingement of cranial nerves or spinal nerves
    • Left-right imbalances
    • Head injuries
    • Confusion
    • Feelings of compression or pressure
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Circulatory disorders
    • Organ dysfunction
    • Learning difficulties
    • Neuro-endocrine problems
    • TMJ and dental problems
    • Trauma of all kinds — birth, falls, accidents and other injuries, physical, sexual or emotional abuse, PTSD, loss/grief, surgery, anesthesia, among others.

Craniosacral Therapy is also excellent as a preventive therapy, because it can facilitate the resolution of imbalances within a patient’s system that they may not be consciously aware of.

What Can I Expect in a Craniosacral Therapy Session?

Craniosacral Therapy is done in a warm, quiet room. For Craniosacral Therapy alone, the session will be conducted with you clothed. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to breath and move easily. If another treatment modality will be used in the same session (such as Frequency Specific Microcurrent), you may be asked to remove your clothing.

You will lie on a treatment table, and the practitioner will start by laying their hands on your feet and your head to assess the movement in your system. They will then move from place to place, gently holding your head, supporting your sacrum, or lightly touching other areas that require attention.

How Often Will I Need a Treatment?

This depends on what your goals are, what symptoms you suffer from, and how readily your system responds to this therapy. As a general rule, three to ten sessions will have a significant impact on most people’s health, and in some cases only one session can make a dramatic difference. Often, patients receive regular sessions for longer periods of time, followed by an occasional tune-up to maintain health and balance.
