What to Take into Account when Traveling to Northern California

Booking Accommodations

Some helpful things you should know

First- Please keep in mind that Sonoma County is a popular destination, and often hotels and vacation rentals book up in advance. Plan your trip 3-6 months in advance whenever possible.

Second – we have a list (see below) of any place we have heard positive feedback from our patients about.  Patients have very different needs when they travel, and depending on budget and who may be traveling with them, those needs change.

More things to consider

Hotels in our area run from $70 for the Motel 6 to $130+ for the Hilton and prices are higher on weekends.

Vacation rentals are great options and often patients will use vrbo.com or Airbnb.com to book a local space.  The owners may be open to negotiating if you are booking a longer stay.   Many people in Sonoma County are conscious about using natural products etc., but it is still important to talk about your allergy issues with the owner of the property.

Vacation rentals are often pre-paid and rarely do they refund if it does not work out.  Vacation rentals vary from a low of $75/night to thousands.

Listed on our website is a time share, the Worldmark.  This is a good example of a place that gets a “mixed review.”  These are time shares and so each one is owned separately. Some patients think they are fabulous, the price point is low and you can get a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom, or a suite with a Murphy bed in the living room.  Some are super clean and some are less so. They are not fancy, but you have a kitchen, a balcony and a little privacy.  They are within 5 miles of Gordon Medical.

When you are booking in our county, Windsor, Cloverdale and Santa Rosa are less expensive than Healdsburg, Sonoma, Petaluma and Sebastopol.  GMA is at the very North end of Santa Rosa so it is as close to Cloverdale as it is to Petaluma or the city of Sonoma.

What to Wear

Check the local weather before you depart. Temperatures can vary from the coast to inland each day. Wine country casual is fine for evenings out, while jeans, khakis or shorts, T-shirts, comfortable walking shoes, a sweater, and a medium-weight jacket should suffice for sightseeing. Think layers. A chilly, foggy summer morning may heat up to the 80s or 90s by 2 p.m. Temperatures start to drop after the sun goes down. In winter heavy coats aren’t necessary, but you’ll want a medium-weight water-resistant jacket.

Sonoma County Weather

Sonoma County’s natural beauty and moderate temperatures seldom dip below freezing, even in the winter. The area’s 25- to 30-inch annual rainfall happens primarily from November through April. While California frequently has drought, when it rains here it can rain heavily.

January – Average high /low

Inland: 58 F (14 C) / 36 F (2 C)
Coast: 56 F (13 C) / 35 F (2 C)

July – Average high /low

Inland: 90 F (32 C) / 52 F (12 C)
Coast: 80 F (26 C) / 48 (8 C)

Coastal Weather

Temperate year-round, the weather on the Sonoma Coast follows a pattern of maritime fog in the morning which  gives way to California sunshine around noon. When inland valleys heat up, the coast remains cool. The weather can be changeable; layered clothing is recommended. The temperatures are significantly warmer in the north and east, the west and south are cooler. Even a few miles can make a difference in temperatures, so plan for change. This is especially important for patients who are temperature sensitive.

Places to Stay

Our First Suggestions
Hilton Garden Inn at Santa Rosa Airport

If you are flying in and staying at the Hilton Garden, which is very close to the office, they will often help with rides to and from appointments and the local airport.  This is handy if you are not able to drive or need to be close by.

The Hilton Garden does not use bleach cleaning products and our patients have found it to be a safe place.  However, there is no kitchen, and it sells out every weekend.  You must book weekends well in advance.
