Out with the Old In with the New Mind and Body

Bio picBy Lauren Gordon-Fahn, L.Ac.

While this is the season to be freely giving of love and good cheer there may be other parts of our system that are feeling contained, sluggish, and well, constipated! Not a usual topic for the season but this word, be it only mentioned in a whisper, has a few meanings and can be limiting our joyous movement forward into the new year.

In Chinese Medicine the inability to sort through things and let them go often falls under the domain of three Meridians: the Small Intestine, the Large Intestine, and the Liver. Emotional and Physical constraint are dominated by these three energy channels and there are a few quick fixes merging Acupressure and Meditation that may make- if I may be so bold – more room in your system for welcoming the new year

For a little New Year’s Resolution Self Care, test this system daily for three weeks. Do each set in the ordered listed: massage then the meditative mantra!

The Future of Healing the Immune System: Biome Reconstitution

Today, I am delighted to be joined by William Parker, PhD from Duke University, who is one of the pioneers of Biome Reconstitution. Although that phrase sounds complicated, what it refers to is correcting the imbalances in our intestines by re-introducing carefully selected benign microbes that have the ability to remind our immune system about the millennia-long relationship it has had with these microbes, and by doing so, reboot the intestinal milieu to a much healthier state. This concept may underlie the future of immunology and we encourage you to tune in for this important program.

All Disease Begins in the Gut

“All disease begins in the gut” ~ Hippocrates

Lyme disease,… Borrelia burgdorferi (Bb) and other tick borne coinfections are strange, confounding, infuriating, scary, annoying, mysterious, and apparently controversial. Call it active Lyme or chronic Lyme, or do like the Infectious Disease Society of America guys do: deny, deny, deny, and call it “Post Lyme Disease Syndrome.” The fact remains, people are still sick. The symptoms are many, and can be anything from uncomfortable to debilitating. Today, we concentrate on how food can effect how you feel and heal from tick borne illness.

When infected by Lyme disease, the immune system is invaded with a tiny microorganism called a spirochete that is thought to be capable of sequestering itself into the tissues of the body. This can make it difficult to eradicate with one short-term prescription of antibiotics. The spirochete is intelligent and can use the body to hide and shift while avoiding treatment. The ability for this microorganism to hide can create a constant state of infection that causes persistent inflammation and immune dysregulation. With over 70% of the immune system lining the gut, this can lead to digestive inflammation and other digestive and systemic issues. Since you eat every day, and the immune system has to deal with everything that you eat, you might just have a problem on your hands if you’re eating the wrong foods. [Read more…]
