The Healing Power of Plants & Herbs: A Discussion with Stephen Buhner

Today I have the great pleasure of talking with Stephen Harrod Buhner, internationally respected as an authority on the healing capacities of plants and herbs. Stephen has long been known for his classic book: “Healing Lyme” which he is currently revising, and his in-depth description of working with plants in several volumes including “The Secret Teachings of Plants.” In the past several years he has expanded his explorations, writing about Bartonella, Mycoplasma, Viruses, Babesia and Ehrlichia. The Problem with Pain Medication

Most people have taken non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), acetaminophen, or opiate medications for acute pain such as headache, toothache, back strain, or kidney stones. All can have adverse consequences when administered over the long term while treating chronic arthritis, spinal pain, migraine, etc. It is always advisable to address the sources of chronic pain, to restore the body’s natural function, and to avoid chronic exposure to these medications. There are natural effective options for pain management which have no adverse reactions at therapeutic doses, and can be used while the underlying cause of pain is being treated.

NSAIDS

All NSAIDS decrease blood flow to the kidneys and increase stomach acid production. This can lead to further prescriptions, with their own side-effects. Continuing the NSAIDs may result in kidney insufficiency and eventual failure. Increased stomach acidity can result in stomach inflammation (gastritis) or even ulcers. A resulting proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) prescription can lead to bone mineral loss and impaired protein digestion.

Acetaminophen (APAP) is potentially liver toxic. The daily maximum dose is 4000 mg, but this does not take into account one’s age, size, or genetic detoxification capacity. Prescription medicines with APAP contribute to total daily acetaminophen dose. Having any alcohol blood level while the liver is detoxifying acetaminophen can lead to acute liver failure.

Opiate Pain Medication

Opiates work because they resemble the body’s native endorphins. When pain signals exceed a patient’s tolerance, we prescribe opiates. However, as one uses this class of medications, there is an attendant reduction in endorphin receptors, as well as a reduction in the natural production of endorphins, which reduces these medications’ effectiveness. Ongoing prescriptions for chronic pain will often need to be increased to achieve the same relief. But the body’s adjustments to the new dose will also continue.

The Best Approach to Pain Management is Holistic.

Chronic pain may be caused by structural imbalances, trauma, infections, autoimmune processes, hormone imbalance, poor circulation, nerve entrapment, toxic exposures, and/or nutritional deficiency; this list is not exhaustive. Some herbs and supplements to consider which are shown to reduce inflammation include omega-3 oils, curcumin, quercetin, boswellia, devil’s claw, cat’s claw, and ginger, which all have good studies to support their use. NSAIDS are better applied topically, causing no systemic effects. The different approaches to each health issue needs to be specifically addressed by your integrative care provider for you.

Using Herbal Treatments for Lyme Disease

By Mara Williams, NP

Last November I was blessed to spend a weekend with one of the world’s top herbalists, Stephen Buhner. He is an extraordinary man, fabulous story teller and brilliant in his field of herbalism. Everything he writes is backed by research.

Basic wisdom imparted that weekend included many clinical pearls. Some of my favorites are that Bacteria are sentient beings, have been around the planet for 3.5 billion years and are not going anywhere. (See Plant Intelligence and the Imaginal Realm: Beyond the Doors of Perception into the Dreaming of Earth.) As they are sentient, it is important to develop a relationship with them. We can communicate with bacteria. Their intelligence is astounding as they can communicate and exchange genetic information with other bugs and adapt according to that information. What is so fantastic about herbs is that, as plants, they adapt to the changes in the bugs. The bugs do not develop resistance to the herbs as a result. [Read more…]

Things to Look for When Choosing a Supplement

curcuminAs science and our market evolve, additional questions come up regarding curcumin and absorption. We have noticed new players in the curcumin market claiming extremely high absorption. As we all know, absorption is ONE key piece of what makes curcumin beneficial. However, as research continues it is very important to know ALL the important factors that make curcumin valuable to your patients. What do you need to ask yourself when choosing a curcumin product? We hope the attached information will help you determine just that.

Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem – NY Times

The New York Times recently published an article based on a study done to find out the integrity of the herbal products available for the public’s use. You can read the article, “Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem“, on the Times website, and the original study by using the links below.

Americans spend an estimated $5 billion a year on unproven herbal supplements that promise everything from fighting off colds to curbing hot flashes and boosting memory. But now there is a new reason for supplement buyers to beware: DNA tests show that many pills labeled as healing herbs are little more than powdered rice and weeds. [Read more…]
